Final Blog Post

My top three favorite Blog Posts

3
http://lwithforce.blogspot.com/2011/09/homer-analyzed-or-interpreted.html
In this post i talk about my discovery of the idea that Homer can be Analyzed but not interpruted. It opened my mid and remined me that everybody comprehends a reading differentley than the other.
2
I talk about who I thought was the tragic hero and why and it was interesting to see who fellow classmates picked as their tragic hero. Each person interpretation of Antigone was different.
1
In this blog post I talk about Dante's version of Hell and how his version of Satan was different from the cliche that I am used to. Satan is punsihed rather than reigning over Hell. This was an amazing idea that i had not realized before.

I liked #3 a lot because it opened my mind. It pointed out a different way of thinking that Homer and his readings can be analyzed but not interpreted and made me realize that many other readings can be interpreted in a different way by each person. A great thing interpretation is. We see different viewpoints and discover different meanings from each person.

I liked number 2 alot. I was able to write down my thoughts and interpretation of Antigone and also see the thoughts and views of others. Other students had different thoughts and ideas and it was very interesting to hear them on what was my second favorite reading we read this semester. Some considered Antigone to be the classic hero and others Creon. I felt that Creon was the tragic hero but I could not help but  agree with fellow classmates argument that Antigone was the tragic hero.

My favorite blog post of the semester #1. It is not my favorite out of the shear fact that the topic was on The Inferno but because I had a breakthrough in thought and outlook. My vision of Satan had been changed from a Satan that was tortured in Hell but still reigned over the souls of the damned. Dante's Satan is one that is punished just as much if not more than any other soul damned to Hell. Maybe it was just me and the images Ive seen in movies  but Satan was held captive in Hell rather than reigning in Hell in The Inferno and I thought that was an amazing idea that I was unaware for.

I believe that these three posts were my best work of the semester because they were from the three topics I was the most passionate about. i enjoyed our other readings from the semester. i really enjoyed Beowulf, and learning about the different creation myths and their different meanings. The topics from these three blog posts spoke to me the most and I was able to form a connection to them and was sucked in. I think that's important to be passionate and existed on a topic you write about. especially if that topic is for a midterm essay or final essay paper. There may be readings and topics that may not excite us as readers but English 257 has changed the way I look and think about literature. I may not like a reading as much as others but 257 has taught me that there is meaning, worth, and importance in each literary work. It is there and we can find it if we try and put our nightmare's of high school literature behind us.

Many are are often not taught how to read The Iliad or Shakespeare in high school which often makes a bad reputation for literature. My views on Literature Have certainly changed after this class and I have learned to be excited and passionate about readings and English Literature over all. There is meaning and beauty and o much depth in the words in stories that is there for the enjoyment of it's readers.

Even while trying to avoid bias I believe my performance in English 257 has been very good. I have had a few speed bumps throughout the semester but overall i think I have done pretty good. I have spoke up in class on several occasions which is rare for me in other classes but i am learning to be more vocal and less timid or quiet in class. I have learned a lot about literature and about writing as well. I did not do so great on the Mid term paper but its opportunities like that that help us improve and learn.I have learned how to be even more of a critical thinker and that to do often times means to accept the different interpretations and viewpoints of others to be a well balanced thinker.  I have learned more about writing an argument and just how important adding support and evidence to your argument and paper is. I am very grateful that Scott is so willing to work with us on our papers and help prepare us for future college writing which is one of the most important skills of the college student. The small group discussion workshop was  a very valuable lesson that helps students understand the importance of reading material before class and coming prepared. It is true that at times students will learn the most from each other by contributing to discussion rather then only the instructor.

As a writer I need to remember to add evidence and proof to my papers to backup my argument and make sure that my readers are able to connect my arguments with examples from the text. As a thinker I need to remember to look at writings in different ways and viewpoints. By thinking about things from different ideas and viewpoints a reader and writer will be able to learn new things and derive different meanings from anything they read.

I took Theater 101 and English 257 to fulfill a requirement at Boise State for my area 1 of arts. I admit I was a little nervous about a literature class but am so happy I took the risk it was worth it. I am 10 classes away from getting my Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice and  English 257 has further helped me prepare for the upper division Criminal justice classes I am taking. Classes that contain discussions and term papers of 15 pages and lots of writing, citing and including evidence to your arguments. This class has been a huge help for me and am grateful I took it from such a good instructor. Now its time for the awkward part of saying what my final grade should be. I believe I should get an A or at  a high B. I tried my hardest on each assignment and learned a lot form English 257. I missed two days because I had to get my Wisdom teeth out and a Migraine on the 2nd class meeting. This was a class that I never wanted to miss. I love the topics and discussions that came out of this class. I was saddened to learn that I'd miss the 2nd discussion of Dante when i got my Wisdom Teeth out but I guess they wanted to come out then!. I learned a lot from this semester and will take the lessons I learned on readings and writings with me down my road of criminal justice. Thank you for a great semester!!! :)

Open Post Friday December 2nd

Dante paints an extremely detailed and visual image of Hell that the average person may not think of. Dante's Hell is certainly a punitive place as well as dark and violent. I did not realize how much of a task creating an image of Hell similar to Dante's truly is. Some aspects of creating a nine level CWI Hell are easier than others and some are very difficult. Brainstorming the various crimes and punishments of hell were difficult as well as developing characters that a Dante-like figure would meet in that place. Overall creating a Hell as terrible and realistic as the Hell of Dante's The Inferno is no easy task. Maybe it was just my group or the time constraint we had to create our Hell or maybe it was just me. Dante did have a lot of time on his hands while in exile that he used to create his hellish masterpiece.

My groups Hell derived from the norm on many occasions and actually created a "divine comedy" with many aspects but that was OK. We had our laughs but the assignment opened my eyes on the amount of work, time, dedication, and detail that went into the making of The Inferno, Purgatorial, and Paradiso. The Inferno was the "Lord of the Rings" or "Star Wars" of Dante's generation and its still making and leaving its mark on the world today. The Inferno is not only a literary masterpiece but it should serve as a wake up call to whoever reads it. Whether hardcore followers or believers of religion or non believers the message of thinking about ones behaviors and actions on the world should be reexamined. The Inferno shouldn't strike fear of eternal damnation and torture into the world to straighten humans out but make them think about the impacts of their behaviors.

If only it was enough for humans to do good in this world without use of threat of eternal damnation, torture, and misery. I cannot find the words to express the brilliance of Dante's writings. I have not gotten this into or excited about a piece of literature since I read "The Iliad" and the war on Troy. As many, I hope that Dante's Inferno is made into a movie. In fact a trilogy would be in order. a movie for The Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. I'd imagine a few elements would me adapted for the excitement of the silver screen but I hope that they would stay true to the basis of the poem.
Upon reading The Inferno a video game about it caught my eye. Dante's Inferno from the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The game's story stayed true to the poem with few alterations. It was very exciting to see The Inferno visually come to life in the video game. It was the next best thing aside of Dante's visual description in the poem. I would highly recommend any avid gamer with a Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 to pick up this game and watch Dante's The Inferno come to life. It is well worth it. I will be suggesting The Inferno to ny network of friends and family who have not read it yet. I look forward to reading the Purgotorio and Paradiso in greater depth. Dante has been my favorite subject in this class and it would be worth it to explore the other books in the class rather then the other topics we read. That is just me though!

Response Wednseday November 30th The Evolution of Religion

I found both Jake's and David's responses on "what happens to us after Death" to be very interesting. I agreed with David's point that he feels that it does not matter what religion you belong to and an allegiance to only one would not damn a person. Jake's statement:

"You can be the best professing “Christian” you can be and still spend eternity in hell.  Going to church every Sunday, helping the poor, and being a good neighbor will do nothing for you in light of eternity. The Bible says “all our righteousness's are as filthy rags.” (Isaiah 64:6)  Any good work we can do, or any religion we follow will not be good enough to gain God’s favor.  Man tries to earn his way to heaven through, when all we have to do is trust Christ.  Christ has already paid the penalty for our sins on the cross, and using religion or any other means to try to earn our way to heaven is an insult to God".

This statement has answered the many questions I get about Dante's version of Hell. I find Dante's Inferno to be moving, interesting, and amazing. It is one of the best stories I have read in a long time. I have told almost everybody I know along with anybody Else who would listen about the story of Dante's Inferno. I see the same patterns of questions appearing with each time I explain Dante's Inferno. My brother always asks me how people would be accepted into heaven when the for credentials of Hell and eternal Damnation seems to be so detailed. Dante's Inferno lists the 9 levels of Hell and proscribes the punishments for each sin which appears to be unforgivable. People say that with the list of sins and crimes that result in damnation it would appear as if everybody in the world would be going to hell as everybody has committed one of the 9 crimes listed and more.

I am then asked what must a person do to get into heaven? What must they do to be absolved of all their sins and escape an eternity of torture, torment, and misery.? Jake's response has got me thinking and it seems that the answer has been provided through the evolution of religion. Our version of Heaven Hell compared to Dante's age of Hell have come to mean different things. The common desire of avoiding Hell has not changed. Jake's philosophy that it doesn't matter what you say, do, or not do the reality is that all people sin and there is nothing man can do to "work off" their negative marks that have been bestowed by sin. Jake explains that if man believes in God, trust in God, and believe in our hearts that we will be forgiven of the sins we've committed.

It seems so much easier to create scenarios and reasons of why people are to be damned but developing up a list of to dos on how to get into heaven is even even harder. Dante's Inferno is certainly an eye opener that makes people think twice about their actions and what happens after they die. Dante's Inferno opens up a lot of questions. I often wonder about how people would be labeled to go to any 1 of the 9 levels of hell. Would a person earn a one way ticket to hell for committing one of the 9 sins once, or must they have participated in a lifetime of that sin.

Open Post

From my readings of Dante's Inferno I've come to believe that its version of Hell is the scariest I have ever seen. Each level of Hell gets worse the deeper it goes. I still find it interesting as well as pretty cool that Dante sees  famous figures throughout his journeys through Hell. The fact that the devil is frozen in Ice is a different vision that I had developed in my mind. It throws out the saying "It's better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heaven". This interpretation shows that the devil is indeed not reigning in hell but being punished like the rest of the damned. The devil receives the worst punishment of them all and is not a "king of Hell".

The hell of Dante's Inferno serves as a individualized Hell where each punishment is matched up to crime. Hell in this story departs from the traditional norm of Hell being one place of fire, brimstone, and ash. It is very interesting to see that in some instances the damned is being punished by the very thing he loved the most in life. They must have loved this action or behavior to such an extreme point that it was even more then that of their love for God. This being the reason they were damned. Some punishments seem worse then others such as forced to live in a world of violence and killing for eternity.

Hell seems to be the ultimate and final judgement for almost every version of Hell that exists. Once individuals are sent to Hell there is no coming back you are doomed forever and ever and ever and ever. I would imagine that a crime to receive this ultimate damnation of never being forgiven by god or allowed into heaven would have to be equally great. I find it interesting that humans were damned for many of the behaviors that were in their nature. I also saw that a majority of the famous figures were not Christians such as Paris, Achilles, Plato, or Socrates. This may be the reason they were damned because they did not repent and were non believers.
I looked ahead a bit and found that the Paradiso was as equally as interesting as "The Inferno". Heaven has 9 levels just has Hell had its 9 levels. Each of the nine levels are based on similar but different levels according to actions and behaviors. The final level leads to God himself just as Satan was found in its deepest level. These levels are known as "Spheres". These Levels include:

First Sphere (The Moon: The Inconstant)

Second Sphere (Mercury: The Ambitious)

Third Sphere (Venus: The Lovers)

Fourth Sphere (The Sun: The Wise)

Fifth Sphere (Mars: The Warriors of the Faith)

Sixth Sphere (Jupiter: The Just Rulers)

Seventh Sphere (Saturn: The Contemplatives)

Eighth Sphere (The Fixed Stars: Faith, Hope, and Love)

Ninth Sphere (The Primum Mobile: The Angels)

Response

What happens after death is a greater mystery for some than even the miracle of birth itself. The theories, beliefs, and disbelief's are as vast as there are people dying in this world. Some of these views of death are punitive and some of them rehabilitative. Some contain the idea of reincarnation yet others believe in misery, damnation, and the unknown. It is any ones guess on which one is the truth or if any of our theories about dying are even close at all. Looking through the blogs of our fellow classmates I can see the different beliefs and theories of what happens during life, before life, and after death. I find it very thoughtful that Jake's blog included different cultures and belief systems and how they may be different they still have much in common. I find it vital that the various beliefs and morals of different religions and philosophies are shared and have great respect for those who are willing to display their own beliefs on there blog without fear of judgement. Sharing knowledge about different viewpoints (which is much of what this class is about) is what helps us understand each other even if we do not agree.
I also agree with Nathanael that it would be interesting to study the biblical version in hell as well as further explore the reasons for the belief of a heaven or a hell. Dante's Inferno is indeed the one thing I have been looking forward to this semester. The concept of having 9 layers of Hell based on different crimes is very interesting. I find it impressive that Dante developed this image and story and wonder how many of these great writers develop some oaf these concepts. Concepts and stories that especially have nothing else to goof of. Like a person painting a picture without ever seeing an object. The theory's of what a "pear" might look like from those who have never actually seen one would be just as interesting as Dante's version of Hell. I agree with Scot ts reference to T.S. Elliot's saying that" There is Shakespeare and Dante and nothing else comes close".
I have never read Dante's inferno before but after looking over of some summary's there are many interesting things about the poem. In class where I heard that Satan was trapped in ice I pictured him completely engulfed as if frozen solid. However, he is only frozen from the waist down and is fighting vigorously to get free. The The cold wins only trap him more. I found this to be a mind opening moment. I have always had the picture in my mind that Satan "Reigned over Hell or at least was the chief individual there. From reading this my vision was changed from Satan being the ruler of Hell to him being punished just as much as the rest of the damned. I found this to be a very interesting view of things. I always pictured Satan being damned to Hell as a very bad place but him as somewhat of the chief of the damned.

Open Post: Death and the Underworld

The discussions that are ahead of use for the last few weeks have been the one's that I have been waiting for all semester. I am excited to discuss Death and the underworld and especially Dante and The Inferno. I read The Inferno in High School and found it to be very interesting. The seven levels of Hell as well as the experiences of the people who are in "Limbo" or the waiting room between Heaven or Hell will be interesting to explore further. The word "Inferno" is actually "Italian" for Hell. It is interesting that this interprutation of Hell believes that there is multiple sections each being worse than the other. The levels make sense as they are based on the seriousness of cime or sin.

The nine layers of Hell include:
1 Limbo
2 Lust
3 Gluttony
4 Avarice
5 Anger
6 Heresy
7 Violence
8Fraud
9 Treachery
It is interesting because it was rumored that several famous characters were seen in many of the 7 layers of Hell as Dante ventured through them. Famous names such as Cleopatra, Helen of Troy, Achilles, Paris, and  Lancelot and Guinevere were believed to be seen in the 2nd layer of Lust as Dante passed through. Death plays such a significant role in our lives and every human searches for answers to what might possibly happen when we die. Theories on death for pas civilizations such as the Greek's is fascinating to read about. It's mysterious how they developed the beliefs that they did and their interpretations of life after death.

It seems that the concept of Death is ever changing. Death evolves through the generations and comes to signify something that it didn't mean before. Throughout time people have learned to fear death, to embrace it, celebrate it, and dwell on it. In some cultures such as Grease there was no greater honor than dying on the battlefield. Dying in battle was so glorious that for some it was more valuable than living. For example Achilles was foretold by his mother that if he ventured to Troy it would be the end of him. His fame would walk hand and hand with his doom. Knowing that he went anyway as he would have rather died and have his name remembered for thousands of years then live a normal long life where people would forget his name.
Death seems further away to the people of the world today with the advances of medical technology and quilty of life. There are still things that we still can't over come with death such as old age or diseases. That doesn't stop people. There are some people with diseases that if they could would freeze themselves until a cure for a disease or the stopper of old age is dicovered. The answers to these impossible questions are connected with the many other questions of life. Questions that have plauged mankind for centuries such as what happens when we die, how did we get here, is there really a God led me to the disturbing question.

What if we Humans are the Aliens of Earth and that we came here from someplace else and somehow forgot how we got here?

Small group Discussions

I was looking forward to the small group discussion and was interested to see how they worked.  I think Beowulf was a great story and was worth discussing for our small group discussions. There are however, many other topics in class that I would be very excited to see integrated into small group discussions. I think the idea of small group discussions is a great idea. I think discussions like these at multiple times during a semester would be beneficial for the preparation of college reading and writing skills.
Graded exercises like these small group discussions are good for students whether they like it or not. It forces them to learn the material and come to class prepared rather then just let fellow classmates lead the way. A wise teacher once asked my class the question "Are you going to school for a degree or an education"? Most students want both things but others skate through their college years striving for nothing more than that piece of paper saying you know something about something significant. Students may get that degree by going through school and being "average" or skating by but they do not develop the skills and knowledge that there degrees represent to a certain degree. Many students can take quizzes, come to class, an BS there way through school but they are missing the very purpose of school. C's earn degrees but they don't earn careers as my Juvenile justice teacher tells us every day.
I prepared for the small group discussions by reading through Beowulf a couple times and taking notes as I went. I had no idea what to expect from the small group discussion but I knew I had to be prepared. I prepared for last Fridays class. I always like to be ready for my classes but sometimes things come up with outside of life  and from other classes. This excercise teaches students to bring out there potential and strive to do their best. I learned that it doesn't take much time or effort to succeed in life or class. The motivation and drive is what is needed to will yourself to do what needs to be done. I noticted that throughout my college career the fear of the unknown has clouded my will to succeed. questions like what if I fail or what if this happens constantley go through your mind and keep you from preparing for a task and being your best. Controlling your thoughts and handling your failures in college is just as important as being prepared and knowing your material. I have learned to use that "bad grade" or 'bad situation" as fuel to push me to do better. I don't let things get me down and I use them to get better, improve, and help others whith what i've learned. The small group discussions was very fun and I learned a great deal of new veiws and skills and it renfoced what I have been told about school for years.

The three most important things I learned from the small group discussion and that have been reinforced was that:

1. If you prepare and study for something you will succeed and the discussion will be enjoyable.

2. Coming prepared just doesnt help yourself it helps the students around by introducing them with new imformation and veiew points on readings.

3.  Talking in groups isnts as painful and scary as i once thought and its educational, fun, and enjoyable. It helps open up the minds of the class and discover multiple interprtations of a text which is very interesting.

The small group discussions was an enjoyable excercise that shows that a little bit of confidence and perperation can go a long way in a class or even the real world for that matter.

Beowulf Response

My fellow group members posted some very interesting questions on Beowulf. Jake posed the interesting question on whether Beowulf was meant to be taken for fact or if it was just another story made up for entertainment. David understandably made the assumption that Beowulf was a crazy individual. I agree with Jake that much of Beowulf is fictional and the creatures and events that take place in the text our that of fiction. I believe that the story could in fact be based on actual events and people. The supernatural creatures and events were probably incorporated into the story to make it exciting and "theatrical.". Beowulf after all was a story passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. I imagine that with each new generation the story of Beowulf got slightly altered based on that persons interpretation.

I respectfully disagree with David on the idea that Beowulf was crazy. I believe Beowulf was interpreted as nuts only because he had the power to be so "Super". Beowulf acted so carelessly, arrogantly, and negligently because he had the power and skills to do so. Beowulf seemed to be quite the warrior and was able to conquer any threat of evil that came his way. The end result of the battle of with the Dragon which resulted with Beowulf's death proved that Beowulf wasn't "all powerful" and he was at least part human. The story of Beowulf reminds me much of the of Achilles and the siege of Troy. Achilles was considered invincible for the most part but a weakness was eventually discovered.

Beowulf certainly has it's many inspirations but I think that the story was mainly made for entertainment. The inclusion of such works from Christianity could have been included to prevent the survival and acceptance of the story at a time when such works were forbidden. There certainly is a moral to the story of Beowulf which tells of a king to many good deeds for his people and country. Beowulf seems to be very different from our past readings where religion was a major influence. Beowulf is still nevertheless a great story that is remissant of Greek mythology which I find very interesting and enjoy. I look foward to my other classmates discussions and interprutations of the story during Fridays group discussion.

Beowulf

The story of Beowulf is unlike many of the previous stories we have read in class. Magic and the supernatural seem to surround the story of Beowulf. The past stories that we have read included what many people to be consider "supernatural" events and situations. The presence of God's and miracles as well as great divine power seems to engulf the previous stories that our class has consumed. I have noticed although that the supernatural power has been revealed but not actually visible or tangible in past stories. Stories from the bible discuss the power of god but the god's are never really seen or detailed as the various mythical creatures of Beowulf.

The stories of the Greek mythology seem to revolve around the God's but the God's are never actually in the stories but rather mentioned throughout the stories. The exception of a few stories such as Hercules where the God's are characters in the stories and Hercules fights multiple beasts and even takes on the God Hades. It seems to be the complete opposite in Beowulf compared to the stories we've read before in class. Beowulf focus on great battles, the supernatural, and mystical creatures, Monsters and dragons compared to prophets and kings seem like a significant difference between those stories and Beowulf.

The story reminds me of The Epic of Gilgamesh in many ways as both Beowulf and Gilgamesh start out by having to accomplish an impossible feat and gain respect. In a way Gilgamesh didn't really become a "king" until he accomplished his adventures and learned how to be a great king. Gilgamesh may have held the title of a king but his ignorance and inexperience made him more of a tyrant father then that of a king. Beowulf defeated Grendel and his monstrous mother which proved his great strength which led to him becoming king. Beowulf pursued to slay the Dragon that terrorized his Kingdom as Gilgamesh pursued eternal life. It could be argued that Beowulf was a better person then Gilgamesh from the beginning and gave his life to defeat the dragon so that his kingdom be free of terror.

Evil

I held out for what most consider to be the worst offense known to man. Murder is the ultimate crime that paralyzes our society with intense fear and it is considered to be the most serious.  I have been to a number of criminal hearings where matters of theft, violence, and many other disturbing behaviors have been discussed. I have always been curious about how criminal murder trials function. The terrible truth is that the only images and impressions individuals get about murder trials are from movies or television. The answers to my curiosity were answered when I heard about a murder sentencing that would take place on October 26, 2011. The case was about a young man age 25 that stabbed his own mother to death 22 times. I knew what I was getting myself into and what might take place during this hearing but nothing could ever prepare you for the graphic images of murder.

The hearing was held at 9:00 am October 26, 2011 and was honorably governed by Judge Patrick H. Owen. This was a sentencing hearing. The defendant pled “guilty” which resulted to the absence of a trial. The defendant was 25 year old Michael Lee of Meridian/Eagle, Idaho. Michael was arraigned on seven felony charges in connection with the death of Lynn Marie Blake which also happened to be his mother. These charges included rape, murder, aggravated assault, battery with intent of mayhem, murder in the 1st degree, murder in the 2nd degree, and kidnapping. On January 4th, 2011, Michael Lee got into an altercation with his wife of one year. Lee forced her onto the bed by knife point saying he would kill not only her but everybody else in the family if she resisted. He raped his wife while his 4 month old baby was screaming helplessly on the floor in the background. Michael then bound his wife with chains and duct tape and through her into the trunk of his car. The defendant then proceeded with his infant in the backseat and his wife in the trunk to his mother’s house.

The defendant then entered the home of his mother with his child and sat down and had a meal with his mother and her domestic partner. This situation was a highly controversial one at the hearing. It could not be clearly specified if he sat down for dinner with the two women or if he had gotten there while his mother’s partner was out getting dinner. It was later decided that the defendant’s mother’s girlfriend went out to pick up dinner and Michael Lee purposely waited till she got back to execute his evil intentions.  Upon the return of the mother’s girlfriend Michael Lee suddenly “snapped” and was consumed by rage. Lee proceeded to butcher his own mother with a small knife he had brought from home. He stabbed his mother 22 times over almost every part of her body. The victim’s arm had a wound where the knife had gone completely through one end of the arm and out the other. The victim’s throat was punctured and the wounds and gashes were very deep. The attack took 20 painful minutes all in which the victim was alive to suffer through it all and was quite awake. As if the above atrocities were not enough Michael also curb stomped the side of his mother’s head in which was clearly seen from the massive denting and bruising on the side of his mother’s face.

The commission of this nightmare was executed within the same room and presence of his 4 month daughter. The mother’s domestic partner tried to intervene and stop Michael from doing any more damage which resulted into the attack on her own life. Lee pounced on her as well and beat her in the face several times and made every attempt to gouge out the domestic partners eyes. The partner was able to get free of Lee’s rage and grab her 4 month old grandchild and run for their lives. During the attack Michael Lee had ripped the phone cables out of the wall however, during the attack he would go over to the phone and “pretend” to call 911. The disturbed Michael stabbed his mom off and on while running around the house causing destruction, attacking his mom’s domestic partner, and fake pretending to call for help. Michael’s 20 year old wife was able to fight her way out of the trunk and get to the neighbors’ house for help. The police arrived at the Lee house to find Michael leaning over his mother “pretending” to give CPR.

Witnesses say that Michael never attempted to even put his mouth to his mother’s lips but was only pressing up and down on her chest. It was speculated that this was an attempt to help her bleed out faster rather than to perform CPR. Once Lee was in the patrol car and the tapes were recording he made several irrelevant comments as well as ones that were equally disturbing. All Michael had to say for himself was “maybe I shouldn’t have watched so many movies” or “Maybe I shouldn’t have played so many violent video games” as well as ranging to “At least I got her to shut the fuck up now”. Pardon my language but it appeared as if Michael Lee had no sense of remorse at all and felt that there was no burden on him for the horror that he unleashed onto his own family.

The act of murder performed by Michael to his own mother was not a spur of the moment kind of a thing. The murder was not a crime of instant passion but a crime of 15 years of rage built up according to Michael Lee. What makes this particular case even more disturbing was the fact that Michael Lee had been planning these attacks for days and months in advanced. While his whole family was enjoying themselves at Christmas, Thanksgiving, or New Year’s underneath Michael was planning to brutally mutilate his poor mother. Several days before the attack there was evidence of receipts from Wal-Mart showing the purchase of duct tape, chains, and underwater goggles to be used as “blindfolds covered with duct tape”. This was something the defendant had planned in advanced and knew what he was doing, how to do it, and why he was doing it. The million dollar question is why Michael Lee did something like this. Why did he especially do this to his own mother? Was this the horrifying work of a monster or the retribution of a physically and sexually abused child?

The hearing started out with testimony from each side. The defense had its arsenal of witnesses as did the prosecutors. An interesting observation I noticed was that both the defense and the prosecutors each had two people. Another interesting fact was that the family of all involved seemed to be split right down the center. It appeared backwards in all aspects. The mother and sister of the victim as well as the ex-husband of the victim testified for the defense desperately trying to get a lesser sentence and one of rehabilitation. The prosecution had many more family members testifying for justice who included the domestic partner of the victim, the daughter of the victim, and the brother of the victim, the wife of the defendant, and numerous more family and friends. I found it interesting that the mother and sister of the victim would be on the side of the defense. It would seem that those two types of family would be all for seeking justice of the loved one who was violently taken from them forever.

What could possibly be a justification or even an excuse for such an atrocity like this? The defendant along with the defense claimed that Michael Lee was the victim of physical and sexual abuse. They claim that Michael was repeatedly molested and beaten by his mom’s ex domestic partner. It was claimed that the domestic partner forced herself to the then eight, nine ten, and eleven years old throughout his childhood. She would try to perform oral sex on the defendant and try to “masturbate him”. There were other times where he would be told to drop his pants and show his penis for humiliation and punishment and was often belittled for not being able to “get it up” to meet the needs of the disturbed domestic partner of his mother. Another interesting fact was that the mother’s domestic partner was claimed to punish Michael for not finishing his food in cruel and unusual ways. Lee claimed that he was forced to drink whole bottles of ketchup barbeque sauce and other condiments for not finishing his meals. Michael and the many that know him know that to this day he is very particular with what he eats and consumes only bland and solid foods with absolutely no sauces or condiments.   It was rumored that the defendant’s mother met his stepfather and her ex-husband on an online chatting site. It was also said that the mother of the defendant was involved in the pornography industry and she had taken the defendant to many “erotic festivals” in the woods over the years.

The defendant had claimed to have been emotionally scarred from working in the family business at a young age which was called “Pleasure Boutique”. Lee claimed that he was an outsider to his peers based on his mother’s business and connection to the pornography industry. The parents simply did not want their kid’s hanging around with someone exposed to those conditions.   There were also claims that Michael was beaten by his mother by the mere mention to his mother that her domestic partner was abusing him. He tried to tell her and he got beat for it. The ex-domestic partner ended up taking her own life in 2002 and many of the family members on the side of the defense found it believable that the ex-domestic partner could have been capable of such actions.

In order to put up the defense that Michael was the victim of severe neglect they brought in a psychologist to run various tests on the defendant. The only problem with the tests was that they proved only that Michael could have been neglected or abused as a child but there was no way of proving that he actually was abused as a child. The information provided on the physical and sexual abuse of the defendant of the child stated during the course of the trial by the defense was vast. I could go into greater detail of the abuse and the facts however, there is just no way of knowing form sure what happened more than 15 years ago to the defendant. The only methods and psychological tests that were presented by the psychologist only showed what “might” or “could” have happened but there was no way of knowing if what happened actually took place. The judge stated that even if he had proof that the abuse had occurred it would still hardly justify the series of events that Lee had started. The judge even explained how certain Idaho codes compelled him to give nothing but the mandatory sentence.

Michael Lee showed the many red flags of a troubled or disturbed child. Lee had few friends and stayed in his room in front of a computer screen for the majority of his time. During family gatherings he would rarely come out of his room and when he did he was often times aggressive. His sister testified that Michael was the type of person who always had to be mad at somebody for something. She explained how he was selfish and cared little about other people’s problems or their best interests. Some days she stated that Michael would all of a sudden stop being mad at one person but move on to somebody else and be mad at them.

During the past few years leading up to the crime Michael Lee had a number of respectable jobs. Lee worked at the Ada County Jail; the very one he is now an inmate of today, as well as the Ada County Sherriff’s office. Lee also held a job at DirecTV. The common factor of all these jobs was that Lee was fired for each one. Lee not only became involved with a female inmate in the Ada County Jail while on duty but he was also caught lying about it and was fired. Lee lied to the Ada County Sherriff’s department for then reason of his termination at the Ada County Jail which resulted in the termination of that job as well. The reason for Lee’s loss of the DirecTV was sketchy but it was known that he was fired once then reapplied under a false name and was fired again. During all of these job losses he would lie to his family of the real reason’s saying it wasn’t his fault. There was another time where Lee claimed to have a job for several weeks and took his and his wife’s only car out for 8 or more hours. Lee did not actually have a job at all but claimed that he attended one for some time. Dishonesty seemed to define the character of this young man which further diminished his already doomed reputation.

Michael received the maximum sentence for his murder charge. The other serious six charges were dropped in relation to the plea deal he made with prosecutors. Each sentence was not only a fixed sentence but a consecutive sentence as well. The judge did not want to take the risk of having this individual get out and possibly murdering again or going after other family members. The judge clearly saw that Michael Lee has some major mental disorders and psychological problems and decided to sentence the defendant to a medical institution that can help him with his problems instead of sending him straight to prison. The defendants first seven years are to be served at the Ada County Jail for the kidnapping, assault, and rape offenses and after that he will be on to prison to serve out the rest.

This murder case was intense. I almost felt guilty that I was there using their tragedy as a school assignment. To be writing while they were crying and grieving seemed awkward. Since I didn’t attend the arraignment or preliminary hearing I did not see the graphic images until the sentencing. During the closing arguments the prosecution showed a power point slide show of the murder scene, the knives, and the destruction. The scenes were pretty graphic showing blood all over the walls, people’s hands, the floors, and pictures of the damage done to the domestic partners face.  They even showed shots of the victim completely nude with the 22 knife wounds all over her body. This evidence is so condemning and so damning that I understand why some courts limit the use of it during jury trials.

The effects of this evidence was powerful and there was no question that this individual was going to prison for a long time. The defendant made no excuse and accepted and understood what he did and even said that he wished he could change what happened. The defense accepted and understood the horrors of this man’s actions and accepted that he was going to prison for most of his life. The defense however only had one request and that was for the chance that the defendant is sent to a rehabilitation institution where he could get some psychological help for his many issues. I felt that justice was served in this case but the truth is that nobody won. A woman lost her life, a young man lost his life/freedom, and a family lost a mother, ex-wife, domestic partner, grandmother, sister, aunt, sister in law, cousin, mother, and a friend. Justice may have been served but the damages of these individuals’ actions will leave a mark on family and friends for the rest of their lives.

There is no doubt that this case was a challenge to the actors who fought and defended in it. In believe the fact that there was no solid evidence of physical or sexual child abuse to the defendant. If there was a history of intense abuse I could only imagine how complex a case would become. Kids that kill their parents who suffer from battered child’s syndrome share similar characteristics to those of battered wives syndrome. When individuals face abuse when is it ok to justifiably or excusably defend yourself from further abuse or loss of life? In this case all I saw was hearsay evidence on the possible abuse of the defendant. The solid evidence of the horrendous crime that was unleashed to another being is what they had and the person responsible for such an unnecessary waste of human life was held accountable.

If the acclaimed abuses did in fact take place to the troubled Michael Lee there is no doubt in my mind how tragic that would be. Children are fragile individuals and a crucial developmental stage. When the people abuse them that are supposed to be the ones protecting them and loving them they have no where else to turn. I can only imagine the embarrassment and humiliation a child could feel in such a terrible situation. It put kids in a helpless place where there seems to be no way out with no hope in sight. It is so hard to prove the actions and intent of some sexual abuse cases and impossible to prove that they happened more than 15 years ago when Michael claimed they occurred. The defense of murder that is performed by a child at a time of ongoing abuse would be excusable in certain situations. What Michael Lee did was inherently evil given the fact that he had 15 years to cry out for help to the loved ones that surrounded him. What he did was cruel and unnecessary, inexcusable, and unjustifiable. With such evidence as this horrendous atrocity is overwhelming compared the lack of evidence of abuse.

King Gilgamesh vs King Creon

#5 Examine the relationship between a civilization and it's leader. Compare and contrast the duties and privileges of kings in two stories. What does each story consider to be an ideal leader? How do these stories critique the use of power by leaders?

I thought that #5 on the list seemed like an interesting topic. I've been feeling a connection with the story of Antigone and thought it would be interesting to compare and evaluate the rule of these two kings as well as what their ultimate flaws were. Both Kings had power although they used it in different ways. The people under the rules of Creon and the King had two different rules of their King whether that be hatred, frustration, confusion, or satisfaction. Gilgamesh and Creon certainly both had their flaws but there were also good things the two kings had going for them as well as accomplished. How would these two evils measure up and which one would be the greater evils of the two? Each king suffered from excessive Hubris. I would like to further examine the reasons that each King did what they did and why they were like they were. Was there some sort of message that needed to be derived from the two stories or were they mainly for entertainment purposes.

Open Post

I find it interesting how some fellow classmates believe Antigone is the classic tragic hero in Antigone. I also find it quite ironic how the king is again the one who is in trouble in the play as was Oedipus in Oedipus Rex. I find it clear and present that Creon is the tragic hero in Antigone. There are so many flaws that Creon had hubris being the most damning.
I can see how Antigone could have been stubborn but I do not think it goes as far as a flaw or even a tragic hero. I will agree that Antigone was definitely a hero by standing up to her family and king and demanding proper respect for her brother. I do not believe that anything was flawed or wrong with Antigone and that she was behaving and expressing the feelings and emotions that a normal person would towards a family member. Her brother may have been  traitor but he was still her brother as well as a relative of the family.

                                                                          Traitors!!!
Creon seems to have been the root of all evil in the play and seemed to have caused the world to fall down around him based on the choices he made. The reality was that Creon had the power to do something yet chose to do the wrong thing for his family. I believe that perhaps in addition to his tragic flaws was the fact that the fallen brother as well as Antigone were his tragic brothers kids. These kids were tragically incest which may have led to the ultimately easier decision of ignoring Antigone and eventually doing away with her. The fact that they were not his own kids might have made it even easier to try to benefit his reputation. These facts coupled with his tragic hero flaws made the results an inevitable catastrophe.

Tragedy

Antigone is certainly a tragedy which can be seen by most all who read it. The classic Greek elements that we see in past tragedy's are present without exception at every turn in Antigone. It seems as if Tragedy's always start out with some terrible fate that the hero is destined for and the story revolves around that person trying to escape that terrible prophecy. By trying to escape that fate the tragic hero seems to walk right into the trap and fulfill his destiny. Along the way there are warnings from the wise that the hero ignores or overlooks which eventually leads to the hero creating his own self full filling prophecy.

A prophet told Achilles that he would die if he went to Troy but he went anyway wishing only to be remembered through the ages.

I have heard people pose the question "can tragedy's be created today in today's world"? I think a tragedy can be created today but it would be difficult to do so. A famous example of a good present day tragedy is the story of the transformation of Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Anakin tries so hard to prevent the fate of his wife dying in child birth that he actually makes the fate a self fulfilling prophecy. Little did he know that the dark side of the force clouded the light side and let him see bits and pieces of the future. By trying to change his fate he fell into the trap. He became Darth Vader and all the Jedi were massacred and for the first time in the series evil prevailed.

In Antigone, the same flaws and events unfold that you see in Troy, Oedipus Rex, and even Star Wars. Antigone very well could have two tragic hero's but I feel that the main tragic hero in Antigone is Creon. That may come as a surprise since the name of the play is "Antigone". From examining the play I see the story revolving around Creon and the flaws, choices and consequences that unfolded throughout the play. Everything seems to go south based on Creon's excessive Hubris. If Creon had thought things over instead of letting his pride and greed get the better of him the people he loved would have lived.

It appears that everything that happened in Antigone was set into motion based off the choices Creon made. The flaws I see in this play include stubbornness, blindness, arrogance, stupidity, selfishness, and of course excessive pride. When I think of a tragic hero I think of the character that has everything going for them, the looks, the money, the power, and even the smarts. It seems that Creon used everything except his heart and especially his Brain when making the choices he did. The hero seems to have it all except for one small flaw that brings the whole program down. Just one small flaw that destroys the hero's world and everybody else living in it. Antigone may have been headstrong in the fact that she demanded to have her traitor brother buried but that wasn't asking much. Especially since the dead son was a family member and even more so that the kind was a family member. Creon should have made an exception and not only cut Antigone some slack but himself some slack as well. It would have saved his family. It wouldn't be a tragedy though if it wasn't for Creon.

Open Post: Shawn The Baptist at Boise State. Respect and Tolerance

I was walking back from my Criminal Law 321 class at Boise State and stumbled upon a shocking event. There were two men in the quad preceaching the gosphel of christiananty. This triggered memories of our weeks of discussion about creation myths and creation. The man was self proclamied as "Shawn the Baptist". Shawn was holding a big white sign with bold black letters which said "Evolution is a Lie". The man was loud, confident, and you could definitly tell he was there. The man was stating things such as students are going to Hell for smoking Pot, having sex outside of marriage and that being reborn was the prevention from an internity of damnation into a Lake of firey Hot Lava.

                                                               Shaun the Baptist
I was shocked to find that my fellow students at BSU were very disrepectful, unmature, and downright rude. They challenged every single word he said as well as excessifly shouted vulgarities, profanity, and shouted for the preacher to "shut the hell up". A few students even walked right up to the preacher and threatned to kick the preachers ass and insulted him at every turn. Having the man preach religios texts at the top of his lungths can obnoxious at times especially to the non believers. It is just plain disrespectful to verbally attack somebody who is brave enough and get up in front of hundreds of people for what they believe in. The link below is from a few monthes ago where the Boise State school newspaper interviewd the preacher. His comments were that the students of BSU were some of the most respectful, commpassoniate , and tolerable students he's had the pleasure to meet. Has his opnions changed after todays visit? Is this how the students of Boise State wish to represent themselvess?

What makes this nation great is the fact that we can study the various creation myths in our english classes free of judgement, commitment, or mandation. It allows us to be able to speak our minds and protects our freedoms of speech. The students fired back we have just as much right to speak as you do which is true. However, when the minister revealed that this was a F Bomb free zone, the students started shouting the "F"word left and right. The constitution does not protect profanity, fighting words, obsenity, or other morally wrong behavior. This dissapoints me that the students would represent themselves like that and that it was the majority that did.
